Firefighters and burning structure

California Fire Radio Traffic

There are various scanner feeds for Los Angeles County available on Broadcastify at: https://www.broadcastify.com/lafire/

The first link (Consolidated Feed Dashboard) allows you to simultaneously listen to 6 feeds. You can pan them from left to right to make it a bit easier to differentiate them.

Note that these are actual firefighters, not ham communications.

Help Needed for CU Boulder Buffalo Bicycle Classic, September 8, 2024

The CU-Boulder Buffalo Bicycle Classic needs volunteers (at least 1 more this year) to help with communications along the Peak-To-Peak Highway between Nederland-Allanspark-Lyons. There’s no cell phone service along that route and they need ham operators to relay information and to assist any bike riders that need assistance.

It’s on September 8th this year. They start around 7 am in Boulder and should finish by 4 pm in Lyons. They were thin last year and are down another ham this year. If you have a bike carrier, that’s great, but not required. We just need people to be able to drive back and forth for a few hours and look for anyone needing help.

We need help with the Epic 75 and Epic Buff routes.  For more info on the event, see their web site at: https://www.colorado.edu/event/buffalobicycleclassic/

Protecting 902-908 MHz Amateur Band – Your Comments Needed

The ARRL is preparing comments urging protection of existing and future amateur uses in the Amateur Radio 902-928 MHz Band. The FCC accepted for public comment a Petition for Rulemaking filed by NextNav Inc., a licensee in the 900-MHz Location and Monitoring Service (LMS), to completely reconfigure the 902-928 MHz band and replace the LMS with high-powered 5G cellular and related location services.

All amateurs are urged to file their own comments describing their activities in this band and the expected effect of the proposed changes:

NCARC HF Hamlet / HF in the Park

The Northern Colorado Amatgeur Radio Club, NCARC, is repeating their popular “HF Hamlet” / “HF in the Park” event Friday, July 26th at 6:30pm at North Lake Park, Shelter #2 in Loveland, CO (more information is available on their signup page).

This seminar is FREE to anyone interested in HF amateur radio – you do not have to be a member of NCARC or LARC or even have a ham license. There will be a short briefing on HF ettiquette (what to do and not do), followed by many demonstrations of the HF frequencies. The LARC GoBox will likely make an appearance as well.

The seminar will be informative and should be a lot of fun!

If you are planning to attend, please signup by clicking HERE so we can get an accurate headcount.

Echolink Down

Our Internet connection at the Longmont Justice Center is currently down. Unfortunately, this means our repeater system is not accessible via Echolink.

We currently don’t have an ETA as to when this will be fixed.

NCARC: Blue Sky Marathon this Saturday, 10/21 – Help Needed

The Northern Colorado Amateur Radio Club (NCARC) sent out this request for help to all their members. I’m sure they would be happy to have your support, even if you are not an NCARC club member. These websites appear to have more details of the race itself: https://www.trailrunproject.com/trail/7004320/blue-sky-trail-marathon and https://gnarrunners.com/blue-sky-marathon/

The Blue Sky Marathon is coming up on Saturday, and we are providing ham radio coverage for the event. I’ve had a couple of late drops from the list of operators and am looking for a few last minute replacements.

If you’ve never worked an event before, please consider it. They are a lot of fun, a great social experience, and a wonderful opportunity to hone your on air skills in an easy environment. The expectation would be for you to be at one of the aid stations for most of the day, and call in periodic reports, any supply shortages, and any medical issues with runners. The event runs 7am to 4pm, but depending on the aid station, the times are less. All locations except one are able to be driven to. For anyone wanting a bit more adventure, one site is an easy 1 1/3 mile hike.

No experience is necessary, and we can help with any equipment you might need. If you’re interested in helping out, or looking for more information, please contact me.

Thank you,
Darren Kalmbach / KC0ZIE
