What Is ARRL Field Day?
ARRL Field Day is amateur radio’s largest annual event β and one of the most exciting. Each year on the fourth full weekend of June, tens of thousands of radio operators across North America set up stations in parks, fields, parking lots, and backyards to demonstrate that amateur radio works anywhere, anytime, under any conditions.
Field Day is simultaneously a public demonstration, an emergency communications exercise, and a good old-fashioned radio contest. The goal: make as many contacts as possible on HF bands and 50 MHz+ in a 24-hour window, using the most basic of setups β often battery or generator power, wire antennas, and a whole lot of operator skill.
“Field Day is the one weekend a year when every ham gets a chance to show the world β and themselves β what amateur radio can really do.”

π How Field Day Scoring Works
Field Day uses a point-per-contact system with bonus point opportunities. Here’s the quick rundown:
- CW/Digital contacts β 2 points each
- Phone (SSB) contacts β 1 point each
- Multiplier β Based on your operating class (power source, number of transmitters)
- Bonus points β Dozens of bonus opportunities including:
- β 100 points β Use the hashtag #ARRLFD on social media and post a photo!
- β 100 points β Set up a public information table
- β 100 points β Media publicity (newspaper, radio, TV)
- β 100 points β Message to the ARRL Section Manager via NTS
- β 100 points β Satellite QSO
